Aspen Literary Festival

The Aspen Literary Festival, organized by Aspen Words, takes place annually over a weekend at the end of September. The festival offers an expanded lineup of authors, main-stage conversations, and writing workshops, embracing various genres including fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. Many events pair two or three writers with an experienced moderator for engaging discussions, rather than just readings.

Events are distributed across downtown Aspen, with the Wheeler Opera House hosting five core main-stage conversations. Free programming is available at the Pitkin County Library and Aspen Community Church. The Red Brick Center for the Arts serves as the festival headquarters, featuring a tented gathering space, food trucks, and an Explore Booksellers pop-up bookstore. The festival also includes a Friday block party near the Wheeler, with galleries and bars offering literary-themed specials and cocktails.

A significant addition is the "Next Gen" program, offering free programming designed specifically for children and families. This initiative includes author conversations, activities, and opportunities for young readers to meet writers, presented in partnership with local libraries and schools.
