Orillia Scottish Festival

The Orillia Scottish Festival, which began in 1977, is a long-standing annual event celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture in Orillia, Ontario. It typically attracts thousands of visitors with a full day of music, entertainment, and family activities. The 2026 event on July 18 was originally planned for Couchiching Beach Park, featuring a parade from Peter Street to the park and a highlight of a 1 p.m. flyover by a 1943 Tiger Moth aircraft commemorating the Royal Canadian Legion's 100th anniversary, with the Legion recognized as the "honoured clan."

However, organizers made an unprecedented last-minute decision to cancel the parade and all outdoor festivities at Couchiching Beach Park due to a worsening weather forecast and air quality concerns. Consequently, all Saturday entertainment was relocated indoors to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34. The festival continued at this new venue, offering a "floating ceilidh" atmosphere with pipe and drum bands, Highland and Scottish country dancers, live music, and competitions. A shuttle service from the Orillia Recreation Centre was available to ease parking.

Traditionally, the festival also includes food and craft vendors, a festival pub, and popular Highland Games-inspired competitions, such as a tug-of-war and a modified caber toss, which encourage community participation. For the 2026 edition, a FIFA World Cup match viewing party was also scheduled for the festival beer tent. The event emphasizes its affordability for families, encouraging donations for festival buttons to support its continuity as a cherished community tradition.
