Event summary

Highlights

  • Grand parade featuring dancing horses
  • Commemoration of Black pioneers and frontier history
  • Pony rides and youth-focused activities
  • Community line dancing and local vendors
Founded in 1976, the Oakland Black Cowboy Association established this tradition to showcase the overlooked contributions of Black cowgirls and cowboys during the frontier era. Historically, it is estimated that nearly 25 percent of those working on Western cattle drives were Black, a heritage the parade honors each year with colorful attire and dancing horses.

The festivities at De Fremery Park offer a wide range of family-oriented activities, including line dancing, pony rides for children, and various youth programs. The parade itself often features contingents from across the United States, including historical groups such as the Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle.

Events are scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1651 Adeline Street. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m., with participants beginning their lineup at 9 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the community call-out: 'Together we ride! Together we thrive!'
