Farming for Habitat: How Precision Conservation Can Work for Farmers and Wildlife

The field day, hosted by Jon and Ruth Jovaag at their farm located at 53504 173rd St. in Austin Township, Mower County, will showcase how data-driven conservation benefits both wildlife and agricultural productivity. Attendees will learn how the Jovaags, who farm about 500 acres of cropland and manage 60 acres of woodlands and riparian corridors, have used precision conservation to inform their decisions.

The event will feature discussions led by the Jovaags and Pheasants Forever staff, including Shelby Oldenkamp, a precision ag and conservation specialist. Topics will cover using data to identify less-productive acres for conversion to habitat, the role of precision conservation in farm profitability, and programs for installing prairie and wildlife habitat. The Jovaags will also share their experience transitioning to organic farming in 2014 and implementing practices such as prairie strips, federal Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres, state Reinvest In Minnesota habitat, and cover crops.

Participants will gain insights into how prairie strips, CRP land, riparian corridors, and cover crops support wildlife, improve water quality, and enhance soil health.
