Pilsen Mexican Independence Day Parade

The 25th annual Pilsen Mexican Independence Day Parade was held on September 5, 2026, serving as a major cultural celebration in Chicago. The event took place along West 18th Street, highlighting the traditions and resilience of the Mexican-American community in the lead-up to the official Mexican Independence Day on September 16.

The parade featured diverse participants, including traditional dancers from the Ballet Folklórico Nacional de Chicago and Groupo Cultural Ballet Folklórico, who performed in colorful rilled dresses. Musical highlights included the Francisco Madero Middle School Marching Band. The procession also showcased unique cultural elements such as Mexican cowboys, or vaqueros, on horseback, classic cars, and Xoloitzcuintles, which are considered the national dog of Mexico.

While community leaders noted that lingering concerns over immigration enforcement influenced attendance for some, the event remained a significant platform for cultural visibility. Local representatives, including Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, joined the march to support the community's heritage and neighborhood solidarity.
