Akwasidae Festival

The 6th Akwasidae Festival USA took place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, transforming the Bowie State University campus in Maryland into a vibrant hub of Ghanaian culture. This significant gathering allowed the diaspora to reconnect with their traditional roots while showcasing the customs and values of the Asante people. The festival is a North American iteration of the sacred ceremony traditionally observed every six weeks in Kumasi, Ghana, to honor ancestors and the Golden Stool.

A major highlight of the celebration was the presence of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who led a majestic royal procession accompanied by traditional drumming. The Governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, joined the festivities to pay homage to the king, marking the beginning of African Heritage Month and highlighting the strengthening cultural ties between Maryland and the Ghanaian community.

Public activities included a grand durbar where participants displayed rich cultural attire, specifically authentic Bonwire Kente fabrics. The event featured a blend of traditional Asante rituals and musical performances, including a contribution from the university's Symphony of Soul Band. By combining royal protocol with communal celebration, the festival served as a bridge for passing down history and tradition to younger generations of Ghanaians living abroad.
