Samba Parade

The Samba Parade is a signature attraction of the autumn North Country Fair in Arcata, showcasing the energy of Afro-Brazilian music and movement. Organized through a partnership between Samba do Mar Humboldt, which manages the dance components, and Samba da Alegria, which handles the percussion, the event is a DreamMaker Project under the Ink People Center for the Arts. The parade aims to foster community engagement and celebrate the historical roots of samba, which originated from the traditions of enslaved Africans in Brazil.

Preparation for the parade is a months-long community endeavor, with organizers hosting public workshops starting in July. Samba da Alegria provides instruments for drumming students, while Samba do Mar Humboldt offers dance instruction based on traditional Rio de Janeiro Carnaval styles. These classes are designed to be accessible to beginners and inclusive of various physical abilities, culminating in the coordinated public performance in September.

While the parade is the focal point of their year, the participating groups also perform at other local venues like the Friday Night Market. The 2026 edition is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, following a series of summer rehearsals where participants learn the specific 'samba enredo' or themed story chosen for the year's festivities.
