The festival commemorates the 'Festival of Light,' a term used in Sikhism to honor the birth anniversaries of the ten Gurus or the inaugural installation of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The program features a strong congregation (Sangat) participating in devotional hymns (Kirtans) and reflecting on the teachings of equality and selfless service (Seva). A core component of the celebration is the transmission of values between generations, emphasizing the responsibility of carrying forward a spiritual inheritance.

During the event, the Great Punjab Association recognizes the successes of the youth, presenting awards for excellence in academics and sports to encourage ambition and diligence. The 2026 commemoration also serves as a platform for social engagement, where local political candidates of Indian origin are introduced to the community. These guests are often presented with a Saropa, a ceremonial orange cloth, as a mark of religious significance and reverence.

The proceedings are guided by the principles of Sarbat Da Bhalla (welfare for all). While the event hosts various public figures, the organizing association maintains a non-partisan stance, focusing instead on community solidarity and the promotion of Punjabi cultural and religious values within New Zealand.
