Event summary

Highlights

  • Silent disco tours featuring personalized yarn-bombed headsets
  • Large-scale knitted installations including giant spiders and lizards
  • Handmade public art displays across Cathedral Square and central Christchurch
  • Collaborative works involving street artists and local craftspeople
Originally launched in 2022 as part of the Gap Filler urban play programme, Yarnarchy is now in its fourth year of transforming vacant lots and public spaces into vibrant community areas. Local "yarnarchists" contribute a wide variety of fiber art installations, including giant spiders, huge lizards, and subtle, intricate scenes tucked away for visitors to discover around Cathedral Square and the city center.

A major highlight of the festival is the yarn-themed silent disco tour. Led by Joy Fools performers, participants wear personalized, yarn-bombed headsets and embark on a musical journey through the various art collections. The event emphasizes collaboration between different types of creators and often encourages attendees to participate by wearing their own knitted or crocheted outfits.
