110th Birth Anniversary of MS Subbulakshmi

During the event, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke about MS Subbulakshmi, describing bhakti as the "living soul" of Carnatic music. Sitharaman highlighted how the tradition is preserved through a "magnificent confluence of languages" and India's diverse spiritual heritage. She noted Subbulakshmi's rigorous training, deep devotion to music, and her philanthropic work, including donating concert earnings for charitable and cultural causes and efforts towards restoring temples. Sitharaman recalled Subbulakshmi's rendition of the Mirabai bhajan "Hari Tum Haro" for Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing the singer's dedication to perfecting its pronunciation.

MS Subbulakshmi, born on September 16, 1916, in Madurai, was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Carnatic vocal music, known for her ability to transcend barriers and popularize Indian classical music globally. She was the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna in 1998, India's highest civilian honor, and the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1974. She also made history as the first Indian musician to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966.
