Lilong border fair

The Lilong border fair is a seasonal trading event held at the Lilong border point in Nepal's Humla district. In 2026, the fair took place from July 30 to August 10, serving as a temporary Chinese market for residents of the remote Karnali Province. These seasonal fairs are highly anticipated by local villagers who face high food costs and difficult terrain, as Chinese goods are often significantly more affordable and accessible than those transported from distant Nepali district headquarters.

During the event, residents from the surrounding highlands sell high-value medicinal herbs such as yarsagumba, panchaule, and jatamasi. They also trade livestock products, including mountain goat meat, sheep wool, and ghee. The income generated from these sales is typically used to purchase a year's supply of clothing, rice, and other household essentials from Chinese traders.

The timing and operation of the fair are primarily decided by Chinese authorities, with local Nepali administrators providing security and issuing temporary border passes to residents. While similar fairs occur at other points like Marim La and Hyajimar, the Lilong market is one of the key seasonal windows for cross-border commerce in the region.
