Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak 2026 celebration

The Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak 2026 celebration serves as a major state-level observance of the traditional harvest festival, highlighting the cultural heritage and unity of the Dayak people. The festivities began with a sacred miring ritual led by a lemambang (ritual specialist) at the Tun Jugah Shopping Complex. This ceremony involved specific offerings such as pulut, eggs, and tobacco to seek blessings, protection, and prosperity for the region. The ritual was attended by various state dignitaries and community leaders.

Following the opening ritual, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officially launched the event by striking a ceremonial gong. This act signaled the start of the Niti Daun procession, a vibrant street parade that showcased the diversity of Sarawak's indigenous identities. The procession featured representatives from numerous Dayak associations dressed in traditional costumes, accompanied by cultural performances as they marched toward the Kuching Waterfront.

The celebration is an annual event intended to celebrate the contributions of the Dayak community to Sarawak. By transforming the streets of Kuching into a public showcase of dance, music, and attire, the event reinforces the cultural significance of Gawai Dayak as a symbol of harmony and gratitude for the harvest.
