World Heritage Festival

The 2026 World Heritage Festival marks the seventh edition of an annual event organized by the Korea Heritage Service to promote the universal value of Korea’s UNESCO World Heritage entries. The festival transitions away from traditional preservation models, offering dynamic public engagement through specialized night tours and rare access to protected environments. The 2026 program is structured around three primary locations, beginning with the Gaya Tumuli burial mounds and concluding in the historic villages and academies of Andong.

Starting August 28 at the Gaya Tumuli in South Gyeongsang Province, the theme 'Walk Together, Companion' invites visitors to stargazing sessions, excavation simulations, and history walks. In October, the focus shifts to Jeju Island's volcanic landscapes under the theme 'Heritage and Beyond,' featuring guided treks along the 21-kilometer lava pathway and rare access to restricted caverns like Bengdwigul and Gimnyeonggul. The festival concludes with meditation retreats at Andong's Bongjeong Temple and evening performances at the Byeongsan Seowon Confucian academy.

While many activities are open to the public, eco-sensitive cave treks and temple stays require pre-registration and safety screenings to balance conservation efforts with public access. This nationwide event aims to bridge the gap between local communities and international travelers by reinterpreting ancient legacies for a modern audience.
