SPINSTERHOOD Exhibition by Eva Seiler

Opening on September 10, 2026, the exhibition features sculptures and spatial interventions created in dialogue with the State Silk Museum's historical collection. The artist utilizes the museum's archival materials, scientific specimens, and instruments to explore themes of productivity and standardization in silk production. The work specifically investigates how selective breeding and industrial technology have influenced both biological and human forms.

The conceptual foundation of the exhibition rests on the theme of metamorphosis and the history of gendered labor. The title SPINSTERHOOD draws a connection between the word 'spinster'—historically tied to the occupation of spinning—and the concept of sisterhood, suggesting themes of solidarity. Through her research, Seiler considers irregular cocoons and materials often dismissed by industrial standards to question modern definitions of perfection and usefulness.

Originally developed for the Climate Biennale Vienna, this site-specific adaptation for Tbilisi was curated by Mariam Shergelashvili. The exhibition follows Seiler's 2025 residency at the museum and presents silk as a complex material defined by ecological and social relationships.
