Shinagawa Shukuba Matsuri 2026

The Shinagawa Shukuba Matsuri commemorates the cultural heritage of Shinagawa, which once flourished as a significant post town on the Tokaido Road, a vital route connecting eastern and western Japan. The festival was established in 1990 to preserve and share this tradition, inviting many volunteers to participate in Edo-period attire.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can experience a lively atmosphere with key events like the glamorous oiran courtesan parade. On Saturday, the oiran parade begins at Yatsuyamaguchi around 4:30 PM, proceeding down the Former Tokaido Road and concluding at Shinagawa Bridge, followed by a finale ceremony in Seiseki Park. Sunday features a traffic-safety parade at noon with participants dressed as Edo-style candy vendors, newsboys, and town girls, aiming to promote accident prevention.

The festival also offers a range of other attractions, including lessons in classical handmade toys, fire walking, Tsuji Rakugo storytelling, and taiko drumming. Attendees can enjoy refreshment stalls and a food fair showcasing diverse Japanese culinary delights. The festivities generally run from 10 AM to 6 PM each day, taking place along the Former Tokaido Road, easily accessible from Kita Shinagawa, Shinbanba, and Aomono Yokocho stations on the Keikyu Main Line.
