Mitama Matsuri

Held annually during the mid-summer Obon season, Mitama Matsuri transforms the grounds of Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine with a spectacular array of approximately 30,000 lanterns. These lanterns are lit every evening until 9:30 p.m., creating a glowing corridor for visitors to pay their respects to the deceased. The four-day event is one of Tokyo's major summer festivals, drawing crowds for its vibrant atmosphere and traditional entertainment.

The festival program typically features a variety of cultural events, including colorful Nebuta float processions and energetic Awa Odori dancing. Other highlights often include mikoshi (portable shrine) performances, sacred Kagura dances on the shrine's Noh theater stage, and brass band music. While the core activities remain consistent, the specific daily schedule for 2026 usually follows the tradition of evening festivities peaking on the middle days of the event.

Admission to the shrine grounds is free. The venue is centrally located and accessible within a short walk from Kudanshita, Ichigaya, and Iidabashi stations, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists during the peak of the Japanese summer.
