The celebration predates the official recognition of the holiday, with local residents first marking the occasion in 1868—three years before British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation. The event serves as a tribute to the region's early support for a unified Canada during the gold rush era.

A centerpiece of the festivities is the 'anvil chorus,' a historical re-enactment of a 21-gun salute. Because cannons were unavailable in the 1860s, residents used black powder charges detonated between stacked anvils to create a thunderous sound, a practice that continues as part of the modern event.

The celebration also highlights local symbols, such as the historic Cariboo’s Canadian flag featuring a beaver and a wreath.
