Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present

Located in the Rights Today gallery on the fifth floor of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, this exhibition focuses on the history and legacy of the Nakba, or "catastrophe." The display uses a 12-meter-long space to present the personal stories of Palestinian Canadians, featuring historical artifacts such as family property deeds, keepsakes, and suitcase remnants from those who fled their homes during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

The project was in development for four years before its public debut. Since its opening, the exhibition has been the subject of significant political and public dialogue. While Arab and Muslim groups have praised the museum for addressing Palestinian history, some federal officials and Jewish community organizations have raised concerns regarding the curation's context and its portrayal of more recent conflicts in the region. Museum leadership has stated the exhibit is intended to share the specific perspectives and lived experiences of the Palestinian community.
