Learn to Fish day

Held at the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre in British Columbia, Learn to Fish Day offers a comprehensive introduction to angling and aquatic ecology for local youth. The event has been running for 20 years and features a variety of interactive stations including fly tying, rock painting, and an educational "bug soup" station where participants learn about aquatic invertebrates and their role as environmental indicators.

A primary attraction of the day is the fish pond, typically stocked with rainbow trout, where children aged six and older can fish in a designated zone assisted by experts. The program is designed to be a child-led experience, encouraging independence and a direct connection with nature. After a successful catch, participants can visit a photo booth and learn how to properly clean their fish at a dedicated station.

The event is a collaborative effort between the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre and the Kalamalka Fly Fishing Club, aiming to foster a lasting appreciation for the outdoors. It serves as a vital community resource for families, especially following the closure of similar local programs, ensuring that the tradition of fishing remains accessible to the next generation in the Okanagan region.
