International Literacy Day 2026

International Literacy Day is an annual global observance established by UNESCO in 1966 to promote literacy as a fundamental human right. The 2026 event represents a major milestone, marking 60 years since the day was first proclaimed. While activities occur worldwide, the central global celebration for 2026 is hosted in Chiapas, Mexico, organized in partnership with the Mexican government. The theme for this anniversary year, 'Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,' emphasizes how education drives sustainable development and economic growth.

The two-day flagship program in Chiapas brings together education ministers, teachers, and experts to evaluate literacy progress and address ongoing challenges, such as the estimated 739 million people globally who lack basic literacy skills. A central highlight of the proceedings is the presentation of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, which honor exceptional programs and innovative literacy initiatives. Beyond the official ceremonies in Mexico, the day is marked globally by schools and communities through book drives, workshops, and writing competitions intended to increase awareness and access to quality education.
