South Africa's World Tourism Day 2026 Closure Celebration

The national celebration for World Tourism Day 2026 in South Africa was held at the Legend Golf & Safari Resort in the Waterberg region of Limpopo province. Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille addressed the gathering, advocating for the use of technology and innovation to enhance South Africa's tourism appeal, aiming to convert it into increased travel, investment, jobs, and community opportunities. The event highlighted Limpopo's diverse tourism offerings, from wildlife and heritage to culture and adventure, with the resort's iconic Extreme 19th hole serving as a unique backdrop.

A key part of the celebration was a platform for young innovators to present technological solutions for tourism challenges. The top three teams from the Department of Tourism’s G20 Hackathon—The Catalyst, Map My Biz, and Ubuntu Unlimited—showcased their AI-powered tools. The Catalyst received R175,000, Map My Biz R140,000, and Ubuntu Unlimited R105,000 for their innovations.

Minister De Lille emphasized that while digital platforms are transforming how travelers discover and book, the human element of tourism remains fundamental. Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Dr Tshitereke Matibe, also stressed inclusive digital transformation, aiming to provide small rural guesthouses and community projects equal online reach. The "We Are Limpopo" digital campaign was encouraged to turn residents and visitors into provincial ambassadors by sharing their experiences online. The event concluded with a message reinforcing the partnership needed for tourism growth and encouraging South Africans to explore local destinations.
