Indigenous Games Festival

The Indigenous Games Festival is an annual event organized by the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. Scheduled from September 19 to 26, 2026, it aims to bring traditional games and cultural heritage to communities throughout the province, spanning all five districts of the Northern Cape.

Specific district events are planned for various dates and venues: John Taolo Gaetsewe District will host games on September 19 at Magojaneng 2 Grounds; Namakwa District will have games from September 24–26 at the Springbok Sports Grounds; Frances Baard District is set for September 24 at the NK Hoër Landbou Skool Grounds in Jan Kempdorp; Pixley ka Seme District on September 24 at Douglas Primary School; and ZF Mgcawu District on September 24 at Rosendale Primary School.

The festival showcases nine traditional games, including Kgati (rope skipping), Morabaraba, Intonga (stick fighting), Diketo, Jukskei, Kho-Kho, Dibeke, Drie Stokkies, and Ncuva. These activities form a crucial part of the province's Heritage Month celebrations, which are themed "Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us." The program's goal is to provide an opportunity for communities to celebrate and reflect on traditions and to engage younger generations with South Africa's diverse cultural identity.

In addition to the games, the broader Heritage Month program in the Northern Cape includes a provincial Heritage Day commemoration scheduled for September 24, 2026, at the Matjieskloof Sport Grounds in Springbok, followed by a Heritage Parade.
