Calitzdorp Succulent Festival

Organized by the Calitzdorp Succulent Society, the Calitzdorp Succulent Festival showcases a vast array of South African and international succulent species. The event serves as a primary gathering for enthusiasts to purchase rare specimens seldom found in commercial nurseries and to gain expert insights into cultivating and caring for these plants at home. The 2026 edition continues the tradition of blending education with local culture at the historic Calitzdorp Station venue.

The festival program includes hands-on workshops where participants can learn about succulent propagation and the creation of living décor, such as wall hangings and succulent balls. A major highlight is the guided veld walks to Jakkalskop. Led by CapeNature guides, these 90-minute tours offer visitors the chance to see dozens of succulent varieties in flower within their native environment. Space for these walks is typically limited and highly sought after by attendees.

Additional activities include free educational talks by leading botanists and researchers. Topics for 2026 include highlights from botanical expeditions in southwestern Angola and insights into the iconic Welwitschia. The weekend also features a specialized exhibition of botanical art and a formal festival dinner with guest speakers. Throughout the event, local cuisine is provided by members of the community, including the local DR Church.
