Shinnecock Powwow

The Shinnecock Powwow is an annual four-day cultural event, celebrating its 80th year, taking place from September 4 to 7 in Southampton, New York. Hosted on the powwow grounds within the Shinnecock Nation reservation, this significant gathering attracts over 10,000 spectators daily and welcomes participants from more than 50 Indigenous tribes throughout North America. It is recognized as one of the largest events on the Powwow Trail.

The core of the powwow revolves around vibrant tribal dance and drum competitions. Dance categories are organized across five age groups, from Tiny Tots to Golden Age (50 and over), featuring traditional forms such as the Blanket Dance, Eastern War Dance, Fancy Shawl Dance, and Smoke Dance. Drum groups are judged on their style, song performance, and beat, with men playing communal and individual drums. The event also includes an hour for audience dance participation during dinner breaks, fostering a sense of community and cultural exchange.
