World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

For nearly five decades, the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest has been a signature event of the Sonoma County Fair, organized by the Sonoma-Marin Agricultural Association. Rather than focusing on traditional canine beauty, the competition honors the unique physical traits, quirks, and personalities of various breeds, including Chinese Cresteds, Chihuahuas, and mixed breeds. Its primary mission is to advocate for pet adoption and to demonstrate that every dog, regardless of its appearance, is a worthy companion.

The 2026 competition featured nine contestants from across the globe, including international entries from as far away as Poland. Judges evaluate the dogs based on their distinctive looks and their personal backstories, often featuring animals that have overcome significant adversity or health challenges. The event draws significant media attention and large crowds, using its platform to support animal welfare organizations and rescue efforts.

The 2026 title was awarded to Jinny Lu, a six-year-old pug originally rescued from the meat industry in South Korea and owned by Michelle Grady. On her fourth attempt at the title, Jinny Lu earned a $5,000 prize—which her owner donated to a senior dog sanctuary—as well as a trip to New York City for a national television appearance on NBC’s TODAY show and a feature on limited-edition MUG Root Beer cans.
