Casco Bay Summertime Parade of Lights

The Casco Bay Summertime Parade of Lights is a festive "Christmas in August" tradition that brings illuminated vessels to the coastal waters of Maine. Organized by local resident Shawn Welch in partnership with the South Portland Lions Club, the event is scheduled for its 13th year in 2026. Participating boaters spend hours adorning their craft with thousands of string lights and holiday ornaments, creating a luminous display for spectators on the shore.

The parade is set to begin at 8:30 p.m., with Bug Light Park serving as a primary recommended viewing location. The fleet follows a route that loops between the park, South Portland, and Portland, passing under the Casco Bay Bridge. Participation is open to the public without formal sign-ups, encouraging boaters with vessels of all sizes—from small inflatables to large motorboats—to join the procession.

Beyond the visual spectacle, the parade functions as a significant charitable fundraiser for the Greater Portland Toys for Tots program. Each participating vessel is encouraged to donate at least two unwrapped gifts. Over its history, the event has successfully raised more than $23,000 and collected approximately 1,500 toys to support local children during the holiday season.
