Heiva San Diego

Heiva San Diego is a prominent three-day annual Tahitian cultural festival and competition, celebrating its 16th year. Staged at Harrah’s Resort Southern California, the event draws hundreds of 'Ori Tahiti dancers of all ages, with over 500 competitors and numerous groups participating. It brings together performers and guests from Tahiti, Mexico, Japan, and various international locations.

The festival's core is the 'Ori Tahiti dance competition, where participants perform intricate hip movements such as Fa’arapu, Varu, and Tifene, judged by a panel from Tahiti on technique, interpretation, and cultural authenticity. Competitions include both Mehura, a more languid dance style, and Otea, fast-paced dances performed to live drum accompaniment. The event also hosts the crowning of Mister and Miss Heiva, who serve as representatives for Polynesian culture. In addition to the dance events, attendees can explore a Tahitian marketplace offering island clothing and art, enjoy fashion shows, and participate in a gala buffet.
