Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival

The Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival is an annual festival celebrated in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, traditionally taking place on the fourth weekend of July. The event began as a simple city picnic in the mid-1950s, soon after Erie Mining Company commenced operations and Hoyt Lakes was established. Over more than 70 years, it has transformed into a significant community gathering, drawing thousands of people to the city, which is home to Colby Lake and Whitewater Lake.

This multi-day carnival offers a diverse schedule packed with entertainment and competitive events. Activities often include tournaments for sports such as softball, volleyball, bean bag, golf, outdoor pickleball, and Holey Board. Attendees can also participate in a 5K race, turtle races, and cardboard boat races. Notable highlights frequently feature a Shockwaves water ski show, live music performances by various bands, and a Circus of Bubbles.

In addition to the main attractions, the festival hosts several community-focused events, including a Community Picnic, the Miss Hoyt Lakes and Little Miss Hoyt Lakes Queen Coronation, a State of the City Address, a book sale, and a pancake breakfast. A vibrant parade typically marches down Main Street, followed by bingo sessions and concluding with a gigantic fireworks display.
