Hancock Street History Stroll

The Hancock Street History Stroll is a captivating one-hour walking tour led by the Pentwater Historical Society, designed to immerse participants in the historical narrative of Pentwater, Michigan. The guided stroll is offered on Mondays and Thursdays, coinciding with farmer’s market days, from 11 a.m. at the top of the Village Green, continuing through Labor Day. This allows shoppers the convenience of joining before or after their market visit.

The tour covers a three-block stretch south on Hancock Street to Fifth Street, crosses Hancock, then proceeds four blocks north to First Street, crosses Hancock again, and concludes back at the Village Green. Participants will learn about significant historical events and sites, including the great downtown fire of 1889, Pentwater’s silent movie house known as the "White Elephant," John Cahill’s saloon, the "finger factory," and the 400-seat Faulkner’s Opera Hall. Other intriguing topics include the murders of 1896, Esther Dempsey’s information booth, the story behind a large boulder placed at Second and Hancock streets, a hotel with an outdoor goldfish pond, and a past idea to build airplanes downtown.
