August Meeting (Ogbako Ndi Inyom)

The August Meeting, or Ogbako Ndi Inyom, is an important annual assembly for married Igbo women, functioning as both a traditional festival and a vital homecoming event. Every August, women of Igbo extraction travel from different countries and cities back to their home villages and cities across Southeastern Nigeria, encompassing states such as Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Imo, and Anambra. This gathering provides a platform for women to interact, exchange ideas, and deliberate on crucial issues affecting their families and communities.

Key discussions during the August Meeting often center on grassroots community development, conflict resolution, and women's economic empowerment. Activities include planning infrastructure projects like health centers and clean water boreholes, settling domestic disputes, fostering kindred peace, and establishing economic safety nets such as cooperative funding for rural widows and vulnerable families. Participants often wear matching traditional clothes (aso ebi) to symbolize unity and celebrate their cultural roots. While primarily focused on communal betterment, some critics observe that the event can also become an arena for social competition and a display of affluence.
