New Yam Festival

The New Yam Festival, celebrated at the Ile Oodua Palace in Ile-Ife, is a significant cultural event led by the Ooni of Ife. As one of the oldest traditions in Yorubaland, the festival serves as a formal thanksgiving to Olodumare for a successful harvest. The 2026 celebration brought together traditional rulers, chiefs, farmers, and various community groups to honor the contributions of agricultural workers to society.

During the ceremony, freshly harvested yam tubers are presented to the Ooni for traditional blessings and prayers. In accordance with age-old customs, roasted yam is shared among dignitaries and participants. The festivities are characterized by vibrant performances from cultural troupes, traditional drummers, and praise singers who showcase the heritage of the Yoruba people, often referred to as the cradle of the race.

Beyond its cultural and spiritual elements, the festival is a platform for promoting food security and agricultural development.
