Midsummer Science Museum festival

The Midsummer Science Museum festival is an annual five-day event taking place from July 29 to August 2 at the Seoul Science Center, located in Nowon District, Seoul. This festival is designed as an interactive and night-friendly retreat, offering families a variety of engaging activities to explore scientific principles and escape the summer heat.

Central to the festival is an unconventional “science mart” concept, where everyday items are reinterpreted through the lenses of geology, chemistry, and ecology. Key activities include balsam fingernail dyeing, allowing participants to learn about the chemical mechanics of plant pigments binding to keratin proteins. Another popular station invites attendees to select and decorate a pet rock, examining mineral samples under magnifying lenses to learn foundational geology. Additional workshops cover topics such as eco-friendly mosquito repellents and rice-paddy ecosystems, complemented by entertaining science-themed magic and bubble shows.

To provide further relief from the midsummer heat, the museum extends its operating hours until 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 1. The late-night schedule features a live dynamic tornado demonstration and stargazing sessions at the museum’s observatory, where families can observe the summer night sky. The festival also promotes youth engagement through interactive booths and science busking activities led by university student clubs and museum edusupporters. Most of the activities offered are free and do not require prior reservation.
