Chud Thai: Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Practices of the Thai National Costume

The event aims to promote Thailand's national costume and rich craftsmanship internationally, supporting the country's bid to nominate "Chud Thai" for inscription as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. The nomination is expected to be considered in December 2026.

Visitors to the showcase can experience demonstrations of highly skilled Thai crafts, including traditional jewellery-making, decorative metallic-thread wrapping, silk embroidery on frames, silversmithing, goldsmithing, fabric handbags adorned with traditional gilding techniques, and silk woven with auspicious motifs. The presentation highlights these crafts as a living heritage that continues to evolve through contemporary design, rather than merely historical artifacts.

This Tokyo presentation is the second overseas showcase of royal Thai dress and men’s royal pattern shirts, following an earlier event in The Hague, the Netherlands, in April 2026. The exhibition also features kimono made from Thai fabrics, which have drawn significant interest from Japanese visitors, serving as a form of cultural diplomacy by connecting Thai and Japanese dress traditions. The initiative is rooted in Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother's commitment to preserving and developing Thailand's artistic and cultural heritage, particularly focusing on clothing as an expression of national identity.
