Takahashi City Summer Festival

The Takahashi City Summer Festival, officially called Matsuyama Jo Odori Matsuri, is an annual three-day traditional dancing festival in Takahashi City, Japan. It is celebrated from August 14th to August 16th, regardless of the day these dates fall on.

Each evening, the town comes alive with participants dressed in yukatas to join in traditional local dances. The main festivities occur on the street leading from JR Bitchu Takahashi Station, centered around a lantern-lit stage. The event features the constant beat of taiko drums, traditional instrumental music, and a singer, keeping the crowd engaged for four hours until late in the evening.

The festival begins with a dance exhibition and contest, where local groups such as schools, clubs, and businesses perform. Different categories are featured each day, including a children's dancing contest on the first day. After the initial performances, the event becomes an open invitation for anyone to join the traditional dances, with an inclusive atmosphere where locals are eager to help newcomers learn. Attendees can also enjoy a variety of offerings from food stalls, selling items like yakisoba noodles and fried meats. Unique to the festival, there are also ice sculptures crafted by men with chainsaws displayed in front of the station, which slowly melt in the summer heat.
