Yoshida Fire Festival

The Yoshida Fire Festival, celebrated every year on August 26 and 27, transforms the quiet streets of Fujiyoshida into a blaze of sacred fire and spiritual fervor. Regarded as one of Japan’s most unique festivals, this two-day ritual is deeply rooted in reverence for Mt. Fuji and symbolically marks the end of its official climbing season. Celebrations primarily take place at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Jinja Shrine, where the mountain's guardian deity is honored.

Day one begins with a formal ritual at the shrine, followed by mikoshi (portable shrines) processions. The two main mikoshi, “Omyojin-san” and “Goei” (also known as “Oyama-san”), are carried by local parishioners through the historic Kamiyoshida neighborhood. As dusk falls, the town ignites with the setting ablaze of approximately 70 towering torches, each nearly three meters tall, creating a spectacular inferno of spiritual energy.

On the afternoon of day two, the two portable shrines continue their procession through the streets and around the sacred taka-amahara area. Worshippers follow, carrying susukino tamagushi, simple offerings made from pampas grass. This powerful blend of tradition and community offers an unforgettable finale to the festival.
