Kōnomono Festival

The Kōnomono Festival celebrates a 1,300-year-old tradition at Kayatsu Shrine, the only Shinto shrine in Japan dedicated to a pickle deity. According to local lore, the practice began when salt-preserved food offerings were found to have significant health benefits. The event features a unique ritual where participants place vegetables into earthenware pots to be pickled while making personal wishes. These offerings are eventually presented to the Atsuta Shrine.

A key highlight is the revival of Kamikayatsu pickles, a local specialty made from crisp karimori vegetables that recently faced the threat of disappearing due to changing regulations. The festival grounds host nationwide pickle sales and offer distinct vegetable-shaped amulets for purchase. The main ceremonial proceedings typically occur in the mid-afternoon, while general activities and sales begin in the morning.
