Dekansho Festival in Tamba Sasayama

The Dekansho Festival is a vibrant folk song celebration deeply rooted in the history of Tamba Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Held over two lively days in mid-August, the festival is renowned as one of the largest of its kind in western Japan, attracting visitors with its rich cultural traditions and festive atmosphere. The event centers around the Dekansho Bushi, a traditional folk song that has been part of the region's heritage for over 200 years.

The heart of the festival is the Soodori, a communal dance performed around one of Japan's largest wooden yagura towers. Participants are encouraged to join the circle, keeping the rhythm of the timeless song alive. Beyond the main dance, the festival offers a full schedule of activities including dance workshops, traditional recitals, and live concerts. The celebration culminates with spectacular fireworks displays set against the backdrop of the Sasayama Castle ruins.

Visitors can also explore around 180 food stalls and a bustling night market, which offer a variety of local specialties and summer treats. The festival runs from 15:00 to 21:15 on August 15th (Friday) and from 16:45 to 21:00 on August 16th (Saturday).
