Fujisawa Noyaki Festival

Established in 1976, the festival was inspired by the work of archaeologist Shiono Hanjuro, who sought to recreate Jomon-era open burning methods. The event takes place at the Fujisawa Sports Ground, situated on the ruins of Fujisawa Castle, where the quiet town transformed into a center of fire and artistry. The festival's most iconic sight is the simultaneous ignition of several eight-meter-long anagama kilns, which send towering flames into the night sky.

Throughout the weekend, local junior high school students demonstrate the maigiri technique, a traditional friction-based method of starting fires. Ceramicists and hobbyists display a variety of works ranging from historically inspired Jomon vessels to contemporary designs. These pieces are fired in the kilns and later judged by a panel, with top artists receiving honors such as the Shiono Hanjuro Grand Prize.

Visitors can also enjoy various stage performances and explore food stalls offering regional specialties. A unique culinary highlight of the event is the opportunity to sample cuisine inspired by the diet of the Jomon people, providing a full sensory connection to Japan's ancient past.
