Monti Fest

Monti Fest, celebrated annually on September 8, is a significant Catholic Christian festival that honors the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It also coincides with the beginning of the harvest season, blending Christian faith with local Konkani traditions.

The festival holds both religious and cultural significance for the Mangalorean Catholic community, expressing gratitude for the year's first harvest. The name 'Monti Fest' is believed to originate from Monti or Monte Mariano, a famous shrine dedicated to Mother Mary near Mangaluru. While celebrated in Mangaluru and other parts of coastal Karnataka, it is also observed by Mangalorean Catholics living across India and abroad.

Key traditions include special prayers and Masses in churches, flower offerings to Mother Mary, often by children before a decorated statue of the infant Mary. A central aspect of home celebrations is a traditional vegetarian feast prepared with seasonal vegetables and ingredients from the new harvest, emphasizing family unity and respect for nature. The blessing of the new harvest, especially freshly harvested paddy, is a cherished tradition, akin to regional harvest festivals like Onam or Pongal.
