Aanayoottu (Elephant Feeding Festival)

The Aanayoottu (Elephant Feeding Festival) is a cherished traditional ritual observed annually at the historic Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur, Kerala, India. It signifies the commencement of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, typically occurring on its first day. The festival is a grand ceremonial occasion where elephants are offered a lavish feast, drawing a large congregation of devotees and elephant enthusiasts.

The day's events typically begin early in the morning with rituals such as the 'Ganapathi Homam,' followed by the main Aanayoottu ceremony later in the morning. During the ceremony, temple priests and other dignitaries offer specially prepared rice, mixed with traditional herbal ingredients like Ashtachoornam, alongside a variety of fruits such as apples, grapes, sugarcane, bananas, watermelon, and cucumber, as well as palm leaves and fresh grass. In a recent instance, 50 elephants, including both tuskers and female elephants, participated in the feast.

This annual spectacle attracts thousands of attendees who gather to witness the feeding of the elephants, a practice deeply rooted in Kerala's temple traditions. The event highlights cultural reverence for elephants and marks an auspicious start to the Karkidakam month.
