Threads of Place brings together creative work made by local participants during a community project involving Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, Luan Gallery and Abbey Road Artists’ Studios. The exhibition is held at Abbey Road Artists’ Studios Community Space and the Boardwalk Gallery at Luan Gallery.

The project invited people of different ages and backgrounds to examine Athlone’s heritage through drawing-based practice. Participants explored subjects including the Siege of Athlone, the former Athlone Workhouse and the ruins of the Franciscan Abbey, producing a collective response shaped by observation, memory and shared experience.

The exhibition is open from 11am to 5pm on August 1 and from noon to 5pm on August 2, 2026. Its stated aims include widening access to visual art, supporting inclusive participation and encouraging social connection, learning and well-being.
