The Sound Of Music production

The Cork Opera House hosts a large-scale production of 'The Sound of Music' during the 2026 summer season, marking the venue’s most significant in-house musical project. The production features a cast of 44 performers, including 32 adults and 12 children. Acclaimed soprano Wendy Carr stars as Maria alongside West End actor Matt Blaker as Captain Von Trapp, with support from notable Irish performers such as Majella Cullagh in the role of Mother Abbess.

A key highlight of the 37-performance run is the 'relaxed' performance scheduled for August 18. Developed in collaboration with an autistic artist in residence, this performance is specifically modified for individuals with sensory needs and the autistic community. Adjustments include dialed-down sensory stimuli, flexible auditorium access allowing guests to move freely, and the welcoming of service dogs and sensory regulation toys.

To further assist families and attendees, the venue provides visual guides and social stories. These resources introduce the cast, plot, and physical layout of the theater—such as the location of bathrooms and the box office—to help reduce anxiety for neurodiverse visitors. The initiative reflects a broader commitment by the venue to create an inclusive space where all members of the public can experience professional theater.
