Tír an Traonaigh / Land of the Corncrakes

Tír an Traonaigh (Land of the Corncrakes) is a contemporary cultural production by An Taibhdhearc, Ireland's National Language Theatre, and The Performance Corporation. Set in the heart of the Mayo Gaeltacht, this unique event unfolds across several locations in and around Belmullet. Audiences travel together by bus as the narrative integrates live performance, music, movement, and visual projections directly into the local landscape.

The story centers on two sisters, Annie and Deirbhle, whose dispute over land and nature reflects deeper tensions regarding family and belonging. The narrative uses the annual migration of the corncrake as a powerful symbol, drawing parallels between the preservation of fragile wildlife habitats and the survival of the Irish language in the region.

Directed by Jo Mangan and written by Tom Swift, the play features a cast of established performers including Caitríona Ní Mhurchú and Maeve McGrath. This production marks a continuation of site-specific theatrical work in North Mayo, following previous successful projects staged at local landmarks such as the Belmullet tidal pool and Carne sand dunes.
