Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day celebrations

Indonesia's 81st Independence Day was celebrated with a series of patriotic events and solemn remembrances in Jakarta, spanning August 16-17, 2026. The celebrations centered around the theme 'Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia', drawing thousands of attendees dressed in red and white or traditional attire.

The main ceremony on Monday, August 17, saw President Prabowo Subianto reading the 1945 Independence Proclamation and leading a moment of silence and prayers for national heroes and victims of natural disasters. A significant highlight was a procession from the National Monument (Monas) to Merdeka Palace, featuring the heirloom national flag and the original proclamation text, accompanied by mounted personnel, marching bands, and security contingents. The event also showcased diverse cultural and musical performances, as well as parachutist displays.

An aerial display involved approximately 81 aircraft and helicopters, including F-16, Sukhoi fighter jets, and the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft. Notably, Indonesia's newly acquired Rafale fighter jets made their public debut during these celebrations. Preceding these events, President Prabowo led a national pilgrimage and sacred reflection at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta late Sunday, August 16, paying tribute to those who fought for independence.
