16th György Martin Folk Dance Festival

Named after the renowned folk dance researcher György Martin, this biennial Hungarian-focused edition of the festival highlights the preservation of regional traditions. The 2026 program specifically emphasizes youth ensembles, providing young dancers with a professional platform to showcase their technical skills and passion. The festival alternates annually between hosting international groups and domestic Hungarian ensembles from both within and outside the country's borders.

The weekend begins with a musical parade where participants in traditional costumes march from Széchenyi Square to Dugonics Square. These public processions offer a preview of the virtuoso performances to follow. Central to the festival is a professional competition held at the Kisszínház in Szeged, where ensembles present new choreographies to a specialized jury. The event concludes on Sunday with detailed evaluations and awards for the performers.

Participating groups for the 16th edition include the Hajdú, Kéve, and Viganó ensembles, alongside hosts from Szeged, Deszk, and Röszke. Musical accompaniment is led by the Juhász Band from Subotica, a prominent orchestra known for its expertise in the folk music of the Southern Great Plain.
