Medieval Festival in Szeged Celebrates John Hunyadi’s Victory at Belgrade

The Medieval Festival in Szeged is an annual celebration held to honor John Hunyadi’s victory over Ottoman forces at the Siege of Belgrade in 1456. Established in 2006, the event is organized by the cultural center of the Franciscan monastery in Szeged’s Lower Town, a site with historical ties to the crusaders who fought alongside Saint John of Capistrano. The festival aims to celebrate Hungary's significant historical triumphs through cultural and educational programs.

The festivities begin on Saturday morning with a lively parade from Klauzál Square to the Franciscan monastery, featuring drummers, musicians, and flag bearers. Throughout the day, visitors can experience life in a medieval military camp, observing costumes and weapons associated with King Matthias Corvinus’s Black Army. Activities include knightly duels, archery, falconry demonstrations, and interactive games like the "Dragon Trail." Children can participate in knight tournaments and craft workshops.

The Saturday program concludes with a fire show and a ceremonial fire duel after sunset. On Sunday morning, the event concludes with a commemorative mass held at the Franciscan Church. The festival serves as a tribute to the July 22 national day of remembrance for the Siege of Belgrade, providing a historical immersion into the weapons, warfare, and culture of the Ottoman period.
