Capturing Eternity

Held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, “Capturing Eternity” provides a specialized look at the artistic methods used in ancient Egypt. The exhibition draws from a repository of approximately 5,000 artifacts—the largest of its kind in Hungary—to show how sculptures, reliefs, and murals were designed to represent the concepts of permanence and the afterlife. Rather than focusing solely on the finished objects, the curation emphasizes the artists' perspectives and the ritual power attributed to their work.

The exhibition stands out for its integration of advanced scientific research and digital visualization. Through holographic technology and material analysis, the museum presents reconstructions of statues in their original, vivid colors—details that are no longer visible to the naked eye. Visitors can also observe 3D animations that detail the construction and decoration of ancient coffins, offering a high-tech window into creative processes that occurred thousands of years ago.

Curated by Egyptologists Katalin Kóthay and Flóra Kevély, the showcase includes rare pieces on loan from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen and the Museo Egizio in Turin. This international collaboration allows for a comprehensive overview of Egyptian heritage, exploring how precious materials were transformed into items of ritual and magical significance intended for eternity.
