Dancing Exhibition Guards

Dancing Exhibition Guards is a site-specific performance concept that integrates contemporary dance with visual art exhibitions across Rovaniemi, Finland. Developed by the artist duo Taru Kallio and Tanja Kunnari, the event features dancers who act as wordless guides, using improvised movement to engage in a dialogue with the surrounding artworks. The performances are designed to be fluid and ongoing, allowing visitors to observe the interactions briefly or stay for extended periods.

The event is scheduled for two distinct periods in 2026, occurring in mid-to-late June and early August. Participating venues include Galleria Värinä, Studio Napa, the Rovaniemi Art Museum at the Korundi Cultural Center, and the Provincial Museum of Lapland at Arktikum. While some sessions at local galleries offer free entry, performances at the major museums typically require standard exhibition tickets or a Museum Card.

In addition to standard performances, the program includes specialized offerings such as dance-based exhibition tours for senior citizen groups and sessions integrated into local cultural events like Art Thursdays and Culture Walks. The project is a collaboration with Rovaniemi’s Cultural Services and received support from the Lapland Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
