Welcome Day

The Welcome Day event, the fourth annual celebration of its kind, took place on September 14, 2026, in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. Held at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, the event was organized by Archway Community Services in partnership with the City of Abbotsford, aiming to foster a greater sense of belonging and recognize the contributions of newcomers to the community.

Key activities included a panel discussion featuring community leaders such as Mayor Ross Siemens, Abbotsford school district superintendent Nathan Ngieng, and Abbotsford Police Chief Colin Watson. This panel explored the importance of creating welcoming communities and highlighted the role that local institutions play in helping newcomers feel safe, seen, and genuinely part of the community. Attendees also enjoyed a musical performance by local artist Amy Van Bergen, whose multi-lingual set reflected the evening's spirit of cultural connection.

The celebration concluded with keynote speakers Tammy Brandsma and Hani Kambal, who shared their personal story of sponsorship, friendship, and community integration. Event organizers emphasized that Welcome Day helps facilitate meaningful connections and ensures all who call Abbotsford home feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
