Fernie’s first annual mud racing and bogging event took place on Saturday, September 12, at the Demo Derby Grounds. Hosted by the Elks Lodge #81 and sanctioned by the Chinook Mud Racing Society, the event drew close to 4,000 people to the grandstands.

The inaugural event featured 39 competitors in the mud race and 28 participants in mud bogging, with teams traveling from across the Elk Valley as well as Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The event was supported by approximately 2,000 volunteer hours, transforming the derby grounds into a successful venue. The day also included local food vendors and beverages, with favorable weather conditions.

Event organizer Myron Krahn, experienced in hosting similar races for over two decades, described the day as a massive success. Money raised by the Fernie Elks Lodge, established in 1924, is intended to directly benefit the community. The organization's goals for the event included providing a fun and safe experience, raising the Elks' profile, attracting new members, and supporting local communities. The RDEK Fire Department, Canadian Ski Patrol, and RCMP also contributed to ensuring a safe and successful event. It is planned to be an annual fixture on the September calendar.
